The Basics of Healthy Living

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou may prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers."  (III John 1:2)  Divine Health is a part of God's plan for our lives.  Although living a healthy lifestyle can be somewhat challenging, however, it can be attained by having the right attitude, making the committment and sticking to it.

I am quite sure you have heard of the 80/20 health rule.  Good health starts with 80% being accounted to our diet and 20% accounted to our physical activity.  Good health is attributed to practicing good eating habits, avoiding those habits that are harmful to you, and getting the proper amount of physical exercise that's right for your body.  Please remember, a body needs to eat healthy in order to properly receive the benefits of exercise.

Since our diet is 80% of living a healthier life, the first thing we want to target is the basic of choosing healthy foods and the health benefits that these foods provide.

Basics of Healthy Eating

  • Eat a low fat diet.  These calories should come from heart healthy good fats found in fish, such as salmon, nuts and olive oil.  Avoid trans and saturated fats,    such as  those found in full fat dairy, red meat and highly processed foods like fast foods.
  • Limit your sugar and salt intake.  Many health experts feel that too much sodium in the diet can be harmful, especially if you have hypertention (high blood pressure) or retain fluid.  - If you are taking in too much sugar, you are putting yourself at risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer.  Avoid processed and prepared foods as much as possible.
  • Choose foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  High fiber foods along with adequate fluid intake move quickly through your digestive tract and helps it function properly.
  • Drink plenty of water.  Staying hydrated builds your energy level, therefore causing you to burn more calories.  By hydrating with water, you will avoid added sugar and calories that are found in most bottled beverages.

Benefits of Healthy Eating

  • Gives you increased energy and vitality.
  • Helps you maintain a healthy weight.
  • Helps defeat tiredness and fatigue.
  • Boost your immune system.
  • Wards off certain diseases.

This is a simple plan that can help you get started in improving the way in which you live, so you can enjoy a healthier and longer life.  "With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation."   (Psalm 91:16)       - The benefits are worth the struggle-
